NEW BAND EMERGES — Through the Hills meshes folk and Americana for a new Appalachian sound. The band plays its first show at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23 at Frog Level Brewing.

When Americana song slinger Kevin Fuller found an upright bass player, a banjo player and fiddle player to back him, he was right at home, despite being far from it.

“When I wrote these songs, it’s exactly what I heard in my mind — that twang,” Fuller said, who wrote most of the songs in Coastal Maine and Northern California.

Fuller, who comes to North Carolina by way of New York, is being joined by locals Joey Fortner, former banjo player for Soldier’s Heart, Raymond Mathews on upright and Alma Russ, a fast-rising fiddle player, to form the Appalachian four-piece Through the Hills.
